What do I need to complete my return?
The most commonly asked question. Please download our Tax Return Checklist as this provides a general overview of what we need to complete your tax return.
What can I claim?
The ATO Occupation Guidelines provide a very general idea of what can or can’t be claimed for a range of occupations. There is also general information available on deductions that might be available, as well as a new ATO video.
Your situation is likely to vary so if you aren’t sure, please keep the receipt and ask our staff when we complete your tax return.
I use the Computer and/or the Internet for work purposes – What does the ATO require?
Many people use their own computer for work purposes. Naturally the ATO only wants you to claim the portion of use relating to your work. If your usage is the same all year, then the ATO simply asks that you record your entire usage for one month – including both your work and all personal use (including family members). This will then show the ATO the actual amount of time the computer is used for work purposes, and provides us with a business percentage to claim in the return.
Where your pattern of use constantly changes, you will need to keep the record for a longer, more representative period. Our Computer & Internet Log will provide all the information you need.
While our Computer & Internet Log is based on recording the total time used for work purposes, the ATO recently released updated advice for claiming Telephone and Internet expenses. You can read their most recent update here.
Motor Vehicle Logbooks – What is required?
Essentially the logbook needs to be kept for a minimum period of 12 weeks, showing a fair representation of the annual travel. More information can be found in the Logbook Requirements. For small amounts of travel (less than 5000km), or irregular travel, you can simply download our logbook or make a diary entry.
Am I taxed on superannuation withdrawals?
